avoid unnecessary uses of UNIVERSAL
Foo->Bar->can("method") works just as well, even if Foo::Bar is not
loaded. Using UNIVERSAL::can is deprecated.
But, I was unable to easily eliminate conditional.pm's use of UNIVERSAL::can
